For the last couple of months, we have been planning a self-drive photography expedition up into north Africa, starting in Johannesburg (South Africa). Barring a few delays that prevent us from leaving earlier, we have decided that we will depart on the 10th of June 2018. This expedition will take us more or less 60 days to complete. Please follow our journey on this page. We will try our best to share not just the planning of this amazing, yet challenging trip, but also daily happenings, interesting photography tips, and live footage of the entire journey. That means… you will have the opportunity to experience our journey with us! The planning of this trip will be updated regularly until departure. Once we depart from Johannesburg, we will stay in contact with our audience on a daily basis, depending on our Internet connections. Should we not have Internet, we will continue recording daily and share as soon as we have Internet again.

OUR MAP WITH THE ROUTE MARKED IN ORANGE
I am currently still doing research on all the photography highlights for this trip, which I will share as soon as possible.
Our route is basically worked out to include the three great fresh water lakes in Africa: Lake Malawi – Lake Tanganyika – Lake Victoria
TRACKS4AFRICA GPS MAPS
This is an amazing map, which can be purchased at Outdoor Warehouse for R700-00 (South African Rand) without the special cover. This is the latest “Tracks for Africa” map book and therefore it talks the same language as your 2018 “Tracks for Africa” software for your Garmin. (GPS co-ordinates). Unfortunately, this map does not give us all the information for the entire trip, as we will be traveling further up North, a section that this map does not cover. We will therefore plot our route on a map of the entire Africa for this page.
This book is full of valuable information. I would like to make mention that it does not always mean that the available information is accurate…Africa is very unpredictable and you have to plan for the unexpected as well. Due to political issues, our itinerary might change at the last minute, but we will keep you posted.
DOCUMENTION FOR THIS TRIP – will update this page as we go
It is very important to know exactly what documentation, e.g. visas, you will need to have when crossing borders in Africa. Closing and opening times of the different border posts is also something you should be aware of before departure. All the information can be found on Google.
We have started with which Visas are needed to enter every country. We were told that you can get your Visas at some of the border posts, but we will rather not take that risk.
To obtain all the Visas required, you have to start at least 3 months in advance.
Check the expiry date on your passport. If the expiry date is in the same year of departure, rather renew it before departure. Please keep in mind that the various embassies will keep your passport for about three weeks before you can collect again.
