About Danie Bester

I am the founder of DPC and Photo Critic. I am married to Jenna, my high-school sweetheart for over two decades now and have two adult children, Mia-Daniel and Minnette. We live in Centurion, Pretoria. I am proud, yet humbled by how far we have come and what we have achieved in such a short time. Today DPC ranks under the foremost photography schools in South Africa and we've build a healthy community of photographers. The road has not always been easy but through a leap of faith and the grace of God, we have grown a small photography business to a successful training institute. Working as a commercial photographer and teaching a wide range of photography subjects, including; Portraiture, Studio lighting, Fine-art, Architecture and Food Photography has kept me fairly versatile. On a personal level, I pursue fine-art, travel, and landscape photography. I have recently been honoured, with my work being included in the Collectors Guide to Art and Artists in South Africa.

I've personally bought the book a few years ago and it is available for reading and viewing at the DPC Campus and Studio. It contains high impact photographs by National Geographic photographers. The book is a "must-have" for anyone who are interested in travel photography, or simply beautiful photographs (pun intended).

Canon 70D launches with revolutionary autofocus system

2017-07-17T15:47:00+00:00 By |Cameras, Photographic Equipment|

In the morning hours of South African time the Canon EOS 70D DSLR camera was launched with much hype. The EOS 70D succeeds the rather "ordinary" 60D and it does so with an explosion of new features. From the specs, it will be a worthy rival to Nikon's D7100, but I would have to get my hand on one in order to prevent unfair assumptions.

The Portrait as Fine Art. Learning from painters like Nelson Shanks

2017-08-08T15:58:49+00:00 By |Fine Art Photography, Portrait Photography|

I've come across this beautiful video by world renowned, realist painter and artist, Nelson Shanks. Nelson Shanks created paintings of some of the most important people in the world. I know this is not a painting website, but after all, the definition of photography is "to paint with light". I often teach that we learn to shoot better portraits by looking at the paintings of old and contemporary masters. Through their paintings, they often teach us how to capture light, emotion, drama, mood and atmosphere. As photographers, we should not shy away from finding inspiration by studying the work of other artists and see how we can mimic it by using our cameras creatively.
